for SOMNIUM: THE BOOK OF THE FOREST LAMENT

Somnium is the creative compilation of the multimedia production, featuring art and literary works from the creators of Somnium with artists and writers from around the world and students from Rockford Area Arts Council’s SPARK! Somnium High School Summer Arts Program.
We accept English or Spanish language submissions of poetry, flash fiction, short graphic and visual art that explore the issue’s theme through the lens of fantasy, science fiction, and futurism, with particular interest in Afro-Caribbean, Midwestern North American, and Latin American-based works. We love to receive high quality submissions from new and emerging writers.
Themes and subjects explored in the journal are based on the theme of each year’s production.
Past and current themes are:
2024: The Forest Lament— CURRENT: Forest Futurism— eco/bio speculative science fiction and futurist inventions: Poetry, short stories, and short essays accepted. Release: September, 2025
2023: Water Mythology
2022: Duality and Dreams
Writers are welcome to submit up to three pieces, not to exceed a total combined count of 2,000 words, through our submission portal below until December 30. 2024.

What our editors want to see:
- Well-crafted, previously unpublished experimental and literary work, exploring the issue’s theme
- Speculative fiction and fantasy
- Works drawn on native mythologies and regional folklore with particular interest taken in, but not exclusive to, Afro-Caribbean, Latin American, and Midwestern North American lore
- Innovative use of poetic, literary and visual device
What our editors don’t want to see:
- Clichéd treatment of theme
- Generic use of poetic, literary and visual device
